A Workshop Weekend with Turid Rugaas,
International Dog Trainer
Animal Friends
Caryl Gates Gluck Resource Center
562 Camp Horne Road
Pittsburgh, PA 15237
September 7, 2012 Bonus Workshop
Workshop Weekend Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9th
Norwegian dog trainer and behaviorist Turid Rugaas has made it her life work to study canine social interaction. She coined the phrase "calming signals" to describe the social body language that dogs use to avoid conflict, invite play, and communicate a wide range of information to other dogs.
Identify situations that are stressful to your dog so you can resolve or avoid them and rehabilitate a dog that has lost her ability to read or give calming signals. Become a keen observer of canine behavior at home, in the community, and among dogs to nurture better behavior and build a solid relationship. CARMAA is offering a weekend of learning with Turid, September 7th, 8th and 9th, 2012. Registration is now open.

These are people who are independently care for many stray, abandoned and helpless animals. These are the people who, like Spay & Save, would never think of euthanizing a healthy animal.
Instead - often at great personal sacrifice - they jointly make it possible for thousands of dogs and cats to live long, healthy and happy lives. Spay & Save is proud to be associated with the animal lovers and rescuers who call us for assistance. See loving adoptables at http://spayandsave.org/view/available_dogs

Our volunteers evaluate these dogs to the best of their ability to make sure that the dogs will make a great pet before we place them into our BLRR Foster Homes.
Once approved to become a Brookline dog, the dogs are examined by a veterinarian, brought up-to-date (UTD) on vaccinations, and spayed or neutered, if needed. These dogs remain in the Foster Homes for a minimum of 2 weeks, so the foster families can gain insight into the dogs' personalities and offer potential new families more information about the dogs' needs. http://www.brooklinelabrescue.org/

Blessing of the Pets Ceremony
Mount Olivet Cemetery
725 Baltimore St.
Hanover, PA 17331
The annual "Blessing of the Pets" ceremony will be held and will feature both a new balloon-release ceremony, and the same solemn service local residents have come to expect in recent years. The service will start at 2 p.m.
Ken Floyd, one of the caretakers at the cemetery, said this Sunday's ceremony will again feature Pastor Timothy Kielley's blessing of pets and their owners, a service that in the past has brought smiles and tears, as residents remember a lost pet.
More than 50 people have already signed up, and the hope is for enough interest to create quite an event, and a moment or two of reverent silence as all those balloons are released.
money will be raised at this year's event for charity, including the Adams County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals,. The event will be held rain or shine.

An Evening with Temple Grandin
Greater Pittsburgh Masonic Center
MAsonic Way
Pittsburgh, PA 15237
Join Animal Friends as we welcome Temple Grandin for a program focused on her work for animal welfare and her book Animals Make Us Human.
How can we give animals the best life -- for them? What does an animal need to be happy?
In her groundbreaking, best-selling book Animals in Translation, Temple Grandin drew on her own experience with autism as well as her experience as an animal scientist to deliver extraordinary insights into how animals think, act and feel. Now she builds on those insights to show us how to give our animals the best and happiest life – on their terms, not ours.
Knowing what causes animals physical pain is usually easy, but pinpointing emotional distress is much harder. Drawing on the latest research and her own work, Grandin identifies the core emotional needs of animals and then explains how to fulfill the specific needs of dogs, cats, horses, farm, animals, zoo animals, and even wild life. Whether it’s how to make the healthiest environment for the dog you must leave alone most of the day, how to keep pigs from being bored, or how to know if the lion pacing in the zoo is miserable or just exercising, Grandin teaches us to challenge our assumptions about animal contentment and honor our bond with our fellow creatures.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual, one-day, international event in which artists, designers, activists and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform parking spots into “PARK(ing)” spaces.
The event is an opportunity to have people think about how important public spaces are and how parks improve our communities. These park installations aim to transform urban environments designed for vehicle use into a communal space for public use. It could be an art installation, interactive demonstration, place to sit, or showcase for urban farming and gardening. A park bench, tree and grass works too! There are countless of imaginative ways to transform a metered parking space. For inspiration, you can view images of previous-year spots at http://parkingday.org/ __________________________________________________________________
